Terminalia chebula, commonly known as harad or harar tree, is a deciduous tree that is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is a member of the Combretaceae family. The tree bears small, white flowers and produces round, brown fruits that contain one to three seeds. The fruit of the myrobalan tree is known as a “myrobalan berry” or simply “myrobalan.” The fruit has a wrinkled appearance when dried. Harad is considered a sacred tree in Hinduism and is associated with Lord Shiva. It has a sweet, sour, bitter taste.

Rinse myrobalan berries under running water to remove impurities and debris. In a pot, bring 1 litter of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the myrobalan berries to the pot of boiling water. Let the mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the berries are soft. Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Strain the myrobalan tea through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove berries and sediment. Taste the tea and add sugar if desired, stirring until dissolved. Serve the myrobalan tea hot or cold, optionally garnishing with a few myrobalan berries.
